Algebra is derived form an Arabic word al-jabr which means the reunion of broken parts. Algebra is a said to be a study of symbols and the rules for manipulating these symbols. The basic part of algebra is called elementary algebra and the more abstract part of algebra is called abstract algebra.

What is an Exponent?

An exponent is defined as how many times the number is multiplied by itself. For example: 8 to the fifth means 8 or it can be said as "8 to the power 5". So,

8āµ =8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 = 32768
